In relation to this study, there are three reasons for taking the grounded theory approach to collecting and analyzing data. The first and main reason is the goal of the research being conducted, which is to establish a theory for an industry in which very little is known about the object. The term theory is interpreted according to Markus and Robey’s (1988) definition.

The second reason is that the grounded theory approach in connection with semi-structured interviews provides an opportunity to read between the lines. In particular, if an analysis is conducted with the objective to determine the type of impact of a thing on an (interorganizational) relationship, the researcher runs the risk of obtaining only images which will keep the organization’s reputation from harm (e.g., advertising materials or process models). This target image cannot be upheld permanently when personal, semi-structured interviews are conducted.

The third reason is that the grounded theory approach permits dissolution of social structures (Glaser/Strauss 1998) that significantly affect relationships between organizations and their staff members. The focus is processes considered to be two- way actions and interactions. Against the background of symbolic interactionism, Dey (1999: 26) concluded as follows: Interactions among organizations are subject to a reciprocal interpretative process in which meanings must withstand constant change. Because of its dynamically formed concepts, the grounded theory approach has proven to be a well-adapted tool for describing and analyzing the constant modification of meaning and the continuously changing human behavior connected therewith (Dey 1999: 30).

Ultimately, the goal of this study goes beyond adding value in the form of an abstracting theory and, thus, contributing to the research; the model developed in this thesis for introducing internal communication portals to companies will contribute to the practical application of research in the field.

After data has been collected, it must be encoded. This is done by allocating a selected passage of a text to an identifier, typically a word or a short sentence that is a symbolic representation of the data to be identified (Saldana [sic] 2009: 2 et seq.). For example, the passage can be reproduced briefly and in its essence, illustrated or interpreted. Different passages may be allocated the same code, and one code may be broken down into several smaller codes.

Concepts are formed once specific code patterns have emerged, that is, when several codes can be compiled into one. Concept is an umbrella term for small excerpts representative of specific passages of text. Concepts have a descriptive and an [interpretive function (Glaser 2011).]

[Concepts have a descriptive and an] interpretive function (Glaser 2011). A category is an abstract concept, referred to as “higher level concept” by Corbin and Strauss (2015: 157). By employing the continuous-comparison method, concepts are elevated to more and more abstract and higher theoretical levels (Kelle 2007). According to Corbin and Strauss (e.g., 2015: 13) categories are made up of lower level categories and sub-categories. Sub-categories provide answers to questions regarding how, when, what, and with what consequence.

Sub-categories can refer to properties or dimensions. Properties embody specific characteristics shared by the objects in a category (Seidel 2009). A phenomenon is the central idea, a special event or an incident. Glaser (2011: 3) used the terms code, concept, property, and category synonymously because they all are involved in the process of the conceptual development of patterns in data materials.

In this dissertation, differentiation is made between code, concept, sub-category, and category in order to depict the hierarchy that evolves at the stages of open and selective coding.

Open coding

At this stage, the text is broken down and analyzed. To this end, the text passages are compared iteratively to determine which aspects are in fact relevant to the research question. Once specific patterns have been identified, concepts and categories can evolve based on these patterns.

Because some interviews are lengthy and, thus, transcriptions are extensive, most codes allocated during the first round of coding represent entire passages. In the analyses that followed, the codes allocated to passages deemed relevant to the phenomenon depended on the content of the passages.

This means that during the first round of analysis for open coding, substantial codes conceptualize the empirical data obtained. Researchers cannot allocate interpretatively conceptual codes until all possible meanings have been considered and the context is paid sufficient attention (Strauss/Corbin 2008: 160). Even at this stage, analyses must be conceptual rather than descriptive (Strauss/Corbin 2008: [160).]

5.5.2 Offenes Kodieren

[The objective of selective coding is to define the core category because during selective coding the open codes are developed further and rearranged so that they] contribute to the embedding of the core category (Urquhart 2013: 49). This means the core category is the point of reference for selecting the open codes used later in the theory scheme. In addition, the core category steers the continuous collection of data as part of theoretical sampling. The researcher looks for the context, the prerequisites, and the consequences of the core category. A core category is the central phenomenon that integrates all other categories (Dey 1999: 98).

4.1.3 Developing a theory

A theory is developed by establishing hypothetical relationships among conceptual codes (Glaser 2011: 38). These relationships in turn are created with the assistance of one or more conceptual codes that also constitute the final connection between the substantial data material and the theory. In this way, a theory is developed and grounded. This shows that theories are made up of constructs and the connections among them (Urquhart 2013: 6) at a higher level of abstraction.

Once the core category has been identified, the categories developed during selective coding must be put in relation with the core category in a way that a theoretical model is created (Kelle 2007). Based on the model, the developed phenomenon then is to be integrated into a frame of categories consisting of “causal conditions,” “context,” “intervening conditions,” “action/interaction strategies” and “consequences” (Strauss/Corbin 2008: 99).

During the process of theoretical coding it became apparent that the context, causal conditions, roles/strategies, and consequences categories can be used to restructure previous concepts and integrate them into the core category. In contrast, as regards content a consequence in this dissertation corresponds to the direct impact of the phenomenon on the actors and their actions. Ultimately, the grounded theory approach applied here resorts to a slightly modified scheme developed by Corbin und [sic!] Strauss (2008). Strübing (2008) confirmed that combining elements in this manner is possible.

According to Strauss and Corbin [sic] (2008: 101), contextual factors are specific characteristics of the phenomenon. Causal conditions refer to events or circumstances that lead to a phenomenon or its development (Corbin/Strauss 2008: 100). As opposed to contextual factors, causal conditions are those circumstances which an acting actor can influence deliberately and which in addition influence the phenomenon directly. Roles and strategies include deliberately or subconsciously adopted attitudes towards the introduction and the use of a portal solution. Consequences result from the contextual factors and the phenomenon. In fact, consequences can impact the context directly or even can gradually become part of the context (Corbin/Strauss 2008: 106) or enter into an interdependence with the phenomenon.

The theory developed on the basis of the study conducted using the grounded theory approach will be discussed in this section. The categories and sub-categories are described above; the resulting integrated theory scheme will be illustrated here. Resulting from the research topics and the coding process, the theory is divided into five main categories: one core category and categories that
  • have a contextual connection,

[

  • comprise causal conditions, and
  • indicate roles and strategies and
  • consequences.]

  • Konsequenzen aufzeigen.

[Resulting from the research topics and the coding process, the theory is divided into five main categories: one core category and categories that
  • have a contextual connection,]
  • comprise causal conditions, and
  • indicate roles and strategies and
  • consequences.

In this section, the links among the main categories discussed in 5.2 will be explained. The superordinate theory scheme will be transferred to a cause-effect model that demonstrates the overall theoretical relationship on which the core category is centered. The integrated theory scheme is composed of these two partial results. A theoretical code combines the substantial codes and categories identified during open and selective coding at the conceptual level (Walker/Myrick 2006: 550).

The exploration of the relationship between two categories follows the basic pattern developed from the data (Figure 37). The basic pattern is built on a slightly modified version of the Six Cs coding family developed by Glaser and the coding paradigms developed by Strauss and Corbin (2008) and is the first step towards a fully integrated theory.

To do the grounded theory approach justice and achieve a level as conceptual as possible (Elliot 2007: 215), the interdependencies of the main categories can be embedded in a comprehensive theory scheme using the amplifying causal looping theoretical code suggested by Glaser (2005: 9, 17–18, 24, 46).

Because of their relationship to the object of analysis, grounded theory based studies are more than conceptual descriptions and interpretations of phenomena and the underlying cause-effect relationships. Grounded theories are designed to be understood by the people working in the target area (Glaser/Strauss 2005: 239). In addition, they must serve as the basis from which to deduce measures to impact the phenomenon and improve the company's situation (Glaser/Strauss 2005: 247; Corbin/Strauss 2008: 242 et seq.; Dey 1999: 28).

In connection with the data analysis, the researcher's partial bias (Creswell 1998: 202) as well as the subjective coding (Urquhart 2013: 96) are inevitable. Therefore, the analysis inevitably draws from experiences made in other areas of life and/or research even if this is thwarted by the continuous comparisons and the theoretical sampling as part of the grounded theory approach.
