Allerdings gibt es auch hier wieder zwischen den historischen Bedingungen und den Kognitionen ein kausales Ungleichgewicht gegenüber der Netzstruktur. Emirbayer und Goodwin fassen ihre Einwände gegen die drei Erklärungsansätze der Netzwerktheorie wie folgt zusammen: „While each of these three models does represent a more nuanced understanding of the complex interrelationships among networks, culture, and agency than the one preceding, none completely succeeds by itself in addressing all of the difficult issues at hand. The model of structuralist determinism, for one, features a succession of network "snapshots" of social structure, while neglecting altogether the potential causal significance of symbolic and discursive formations and offering few insights into the concrete historical mechanisms leading from one such network configuration to another. Structuralist instrumentalism, by contrast, clearly acknowledges the explanatory significance of social action, but, on the other hand, conceptualizes the determinants of such action in excessively narrow terms, often relying on unwarranted assumptions about the overriding importance to historical actors of money, Status, and power. And finally, structuralist constructionism affirms the possibility that actors' goals and aspirations might well be complex, multivalent, and historically determined; it inquires, for example, into such intricate processes as identity conversion, structural channeling of learning, and flexible opportunism. And yet not even this model, at east [sic] as it has been elaborated by network analysts to date, fully recognizes the (potentially) autonomous causal significance of cultural or political discourses in shaping the complex event sequences that it examines’" (Emirbayer und Goodwin 1994: 1436 Hervorhebungen im Original). Im letzten Teil ihres Aufsatzes entwickeln Emirbayer und Goodwin ihre eigene Grundidee, nämlich, dass den vorhandenen kulturellen Bedeutungen dasselbe kausale Gleichgewicht einzuräumen ist wie der Netzstruktur. Damit soll verdeutlicht werden, dass die Einbettung der Denk- und Gefühlswelt historischer Akteure ebenso wie die Netzstruktur Handlungen einschränken können. [„We propose that these cultural formations are significant because they both constrain and enable historical actors, in much the same way as do network structures themselves” (Emirbayer und Goodwin 1994: 1440). Das bedeutet, dass für eine hinreichende Erklärung sozialen Handelns, [sic] sowohl die Struktur der Netzwerke als auch die Struktur der “kulturellen Bedeutungssysteme in bestimmten historischen Situationen“ (Schweizer 1996: 140) analysiert werden muss.]

Doch auch hier erhalten die historischen Rahmenbedingungen und die Kognitionen noch nicht das gleiche kausale Gewicht wie die Netzstruktur. And yet not even this model, at least as it has been elaborated by network analysts to date, fully recognizes the (potentially) autonomous causal significance of cultural or political discourses in shaping the complex event sequences that it examines.“ (Hervorhebungen im Original) Die dann folgende Hauptidee von Emirbayer und Goodwin besteht darin, daß sie den in einer Gemeinschaft — einem sozialen Netzwerk — vorhandenen kulturellen Bedeutungen ein gleiches kausales Gewicht wie der Netzstruktur einräumen. Eine bestimmte Denk— und Gefühlswelt, in der die historische Akteure eingebettet sind, schränkt ihre Handlungen ein, ermöglicht aber ebenso wie eine bestimmte Netzstruktur bestimmte Handlungen (S. 1440). Folglich kommt es in einer adäquaten Erklärung sozialen Handelns darauf an, sowohl die Struktur der sozialen Netzwerke als auch die Struktur der kulturellen Bedeutungssysteme in bestimmten historischen Situationen zu analysieren.

Anmerkungen Die Quelle ist am Ende - für ein kurzes wörtliches Zitat - genannt. Der Umfang der Übernahme wird daraus nicht ersichtlich. Trotz des Vermerks "Hervorhebungen im Original" am Ende des mitübernommenen langen Zitats finden sich im Text der Verf.in keinerlei Hervorhebungen.
