| Although the number of asylum applications in 2015 still far exceeds the number at that time, the dramatic increase from the beginning to the middle of the 1990s due to the first independence crisis and the second peak at the beginning of the 2000s due to the wars in Kosovo can be clearly seen. According to UN estimates, 2.3 million people fled during the wars in Yugoslavia, half a million of whom came to Germany. Germany took in the majority of refugees from the Balkans during the Yugoslav Wars (Angrist/Kugler 2003).

Zwar übersteigt die Anzahl an Asylanträgen im Jahr 2015 die damaligen noch bei weitem, der dramatische Anstieg von Anfang bis Mitte der 1990er aufgrund der ersten Unabhängigkeitskrise und der zweite Höhepunkt Anfang der 2000er durch die Kosovo-Kriege ist jedoch deutlich zu erkennen.
Wie auch in der jetzigen Flüchtlingskrise, nahm Deutschland während der Jugoslawienkriege die meisten Flüchtlinge vom Balkan auf (Angrist/Kugler 2003; Munzinger et al. 2015). Nach Schätzungen der UNO flüchteten in dem Zeitraum insgesamt 2,3 Millionen Menschen, wovon circa eine halbe Million nach Deutschland kamen. Angrist, Joshua D.; Kugler, Adriana D.
