Indeed, based on face-to-face interviews with 385 professional journalists, Hanitzsch (2005) concluded that the “typical” Indonesian journalist is young, male, well educated, and earns an above-average salary. In terms of education and training, they are becoming increasingly professional. These journalists see themselves as neutral and objective disseminators of news, not as political actors and agents of development, and they disapprove of unscrupulous practices of reporting. Ironically, however, many of them justify the practice of corruption during their everyday work.
