Loaded with diverse meanings, the term social capital remains an elusive concept in the socio-political and economic literature, sometimes considered as an all-absorbing black hole with less defined limits. Different attempts to define and explain the term ended-up in reflecting complementary or even opposing ideas. Hence, outlining a conceptual as well as empirical review will help us to understand the notion of social capital and the vital role it plays in conflict affected societies. | A great variety of definitions reflecting complementary or even opposing ideas, tries to capture and explain the elusive notion of social capital. Burdened with different meanings, the concept appears rather vague and unclear - a fashionable buzzword in the socio-political and economic literature or 'a black hole' with more or less defined limits and all-absorbing content. Particular expressions of individual style that are common to the work and the source are 'elusive' and 'black hole'. The source expression 'with more or less defined limits and all-absorbing' is almost all retained in the work, except for swapping the order and dropping 'more or'. |
